THE DESIGN PROCESS

Working with a professional garden designer ensures your garden is thoughtfully planned, beautifully designed and a place you’ll love spending time in, season after season.

My approach is collaborative and transparent. I’ll guide you through the design process, listening carefully to your ideas and keeping you informed at every stage. Together, we’ll create a garden that reflects how you live and feels right for you and your home.

If you’re thinking about transforming your garden and would like to explore what’s possible, I’d love to hear from you.

Design consultation: It starts with a cuppa

A relaxed outdoor moment with a cuppa, reflecting the start of a garden design conversation.

At our first meeting, we'll dig into what you'd like from your garden — from your likes and dislikes to your plans for your outdoor space. We'll talk through your garden design ideas, any limitations and what you can expect.

Site survey: Measuring your garden

garden site survey or topographical survey

To understand your garden (and what’s possible), we need a detailed site survey. I'll measure your garden and create a scaled drawing of your existing space.

For more complex sites, a full topographical survey may be required. This includes precise site measurements, identifying boundaries, tree positions and heights, inspection covers, drains and all services, along with spot heights for accurate level calculations.

Concept layout: Designing your new space

Once you're happy with my proposal, I'll start designing your new garden using CAD software:

  • 2D masterplan — scaled drawing showing the new layout for your garden design

  • A concept mood board — presenting a look and feel, with suggested materials

  • 3D perspective — helping you visualise your garden

Masterplan: Detailed drawings for construction

Garden design master plan illustrating the concept layout with entertainment areas, pathways and planting for a new family garden.

Detailed drawings required by contractors to build and cost the garden. This includes the detailed 2D masterplan, sourcing samples, construction drawings and material specifications, outdoor lighting and irrigation plans. That means the contractor can give you an accurate quotation for the work.

I can also prepare tender documentation to ensure fair price comparisons, so your garden is built exactly as expected.

Planting: Planting design and plans

Detailed garden planting plan showing trees, shrubs and seasonal planting for a new garden design.

Plants are an integral part of any garden design. Whether you want new planting beds, or to revitalise existing beds, I can help you create the overall look for your garden.

The planting plan shows exactly how plants will be arranged in each bed. The accompanying schedule will detail the quantity, botanical name and size of plants required.

I also offer a full plant supply and planting services.

Making it happen: The build and aftercare

As your garden designer, I manage the project with regular site visits to monitor progress, ensuring the contractor meets high standards, stays on schedule, and within budget.

I also provide a tailored maintenance plan to help your garden thrive.

Many clients stay in touch long after completion, and I’m happy to discuss evolving needs or new ideas to ensure your garden flourishes for years to come.
